This Is Just The Beginning

Upon completing Living & Working on the Web, as per the self test above, one can clearly notice the improvements in my digital capabilities. However life is a journey and one must always be constantly improving, hence I included a rating for the near future.

Here are the evidence of my change before and after #MANG2049

In relation to ‘managing your online identity’ from the self test, I applied what I learned from Topic 2 which is to manage my multiple online identities in a positive way, having a goal of making it look professional rather than personal. Hiding drunk and #TGIF pictures is definitely the way to go!



Consequent to this module, I used twitter solely as a normal social communication tool. However after exploring the capabilities of it through the module, I realized that it is a very useful tool for job seekers and is also a platform where recruitment officers scout for your personal lifestyle.

Not only is twitter useful in searching for jobs, it also contributes in ones overall professional digital image. I was rather surprised that my WordPress link was viewed by a twitter follower which in turn liked one of my blog topics! This further emphasize the fact that what we post online can be seen by practically anyone!

I was conscious of the blogging scene however I didn’t had the chance to partake in it, nonetheless after the module, the change was shocking.

As one can see, I was astonished by the views from the United States and Australia. In regard to the self test, I learned to ‘Building online networks around an area of interest’ and ‘Creating online materials’ that is being appreciated even by total strangers! Reinforcing the concept of ‘Open Access’ from Topic 5.



I am guilty of convincing myself that LinkedIn is a fruitless tool. This is because it takes time to build up a decent profile and I was rather lazy. However over the module, my mindset was swiftly changed.



Adopting the skills learned from Topic 3, I developed my very own LinkedIn profile to ‘All Star’. Besides creating a platform to showcase myself, I learned that in order to stand out, one must actually utilize the profile to participate and generate content. Be it in the forms of groups or connections.

This goes in line with the ‘Collaborating with others’ and ‘Participating in online communities’ aspect in the self test. Further reinforcing my stated point above regarding utilization of social tools.

Short Summary of the video

One must not only be pro-active to gain exposure from the jobs, we must also record the moments and experience to translate it into digital portfolios like Pinterest and Pathbrite for example.

My personal goals in relation to the video:

  • Constantly developing my LinkedIn profile by adding accomplishments and new skills
  • Have at least 3 connections per week and participate in groups at least once a week
  • Keep a look out for other relevant social platform to use
  • Always keep in mind that its the mindset of constant learning and the skill of adaptability that will make me successful and relevant in the future
  • Achieve my future goals in the self test above

Reflection On Topic 5 + 2 Comments


Its great to see many of my colleagues having different views on this topic. It is a general consensus that students like us will mostly support open-access because it benefits us in learning by analyzing online research. However I strongly feel we should take a more neutral stand and look at the whole concept of open access through the interest of the content producer and reader before making a final stand.

In reference to Jasmine’s blog post, she mentioned the advantages and disadvantages of the open access concept with regards to the content producers. Something that I picked up was the interesting reference to the black market in china relating to research papers authoring. This can be seen here. She made me learnt further on the aspect of both side of the coin, She also pointed out a potential solution which I feel may be viable. The idea of generating revenue passively based on the amount of content shared may be a good one.

In reference to Yi Lin’s blog post, She mentioned the advantages of open access education for the underprivileged people and that they should be given education even if they cannot afford it. This can be seen here. I strongly agree with her that education should be given but at the end of the day, who is going to be paying for their education? Is it right to give them open access in expense of the content producer not getting an sustainable revenue? I feel that it goes both ways, if the under privileged is not paying for it. naturally either the government or the producers themselves will have to cover the cost. On the other hand, by paying and not getting a sustainable revenue from it, producers may just lose the motivation to even continue to create such content.

In reference to Yi Shin’s blog post, she too mentioned that the newspaper industry have to find a new revenue model as the old one is unsustainable due to the internet. However, she had a point which made me learnt something obvious, being a marketing student myself, the use of marketing tools like brand loyalty and customer-oriented relationship could help such industry in overcoming the readers dislike for a paywall content, it may be a viable way to help solve the problem.

To conclude, I still strongly believe that the ideology of “open access” is contextual upon the content that is built and that we should not force or assume that the open access concept is viable for all industries. This can be seen through my blog post.

Nothing In This World Is Free, Except The Air We Breathe


Should content producers make their materials free? I strongly believe that the ideology of “open access” is contextual upon the content that is built.

These are some background information in context of learning which shows the motivation for a open access ideology.


Firstly, these are the Pros and Cons  in regards to open access.



  • Open access model will shift the supplier of money from the reader to the author. “We must be careful that this does not result in barriers to publishing because of prohibitively high author fees.”(Rockefeller University Press) This implies that authors not only create the content, but also pays to publish it for everyone to use it freely.
  • Open Access models may drive publishers to publish more articles to cover their cost, hence reducing the overall quality. This was seen in a article where a science reporter spoofs hundreds of open access journals with fake papers.
  • A given revenue model lacks universal applicability to all journals regardless of type or discipline. This can be seen more clearly in the article by SPARC. Another article by ICM talks about the forms of Open access consisting of green and gold.


If you have noticed while researching on this topic, most of the arguments for the favor of open access are mostly based on scientific publications. What about other industries? Should the same principle be applied to every industry? 

Let’s look into the media industry, through digitization, advertising is weakening on newspaper and online sites because one can target ads through Google and Facebook to individual people, this should be apparent to us now through topics 1-4 in this module.  “Media firms need another revenue source, subscriptions are a good one” However, many readers seems resistant to paying for online content (Fortune writer Adam Lashinsky).

The question is, if we used to pay for the services through “prints”, why can’t we do the same online? Where is this mindset that everything online should be free coming from?

I feel that authors should not be pressured by the public to practice open access in their work. This is a free world where the authors have the decision to choose if he wants the content to be free or not!

Authors should not be afraid of people who practices activism (where they exclude articles from their reviews just solely because they are not open access). I feel that there is nothing wrong with charging a fee for a “top quality” research and that people who truly appreciate the specific content that is created, shouldn’t mind going through the “paywall“.

Reflection on Topic 4 + 2 Comments


Upon reviewing all my colleague’s blog post, I realized that this topic is so broad that I had to create a Prezi presentation to show the outlining aspects of what I learnt in addition to my chosen topic. You can check it out here.

After reading the comments on my blog post by Tian Yi, Yi Lin, Wanchyng and Luna, it made me question myself on the issue of trusting paid reviews. They made me explore the idea which ultimately enhanced my understanding of the aspect on sponsored reviews and the ways to spot a “fake” review. These are some of the articles that I found in relation to the questions. (1),

The process of commenting on both WeiJie and Mabel‘s  made me explore and understand different interesting facets of the topic, the information communicated together with the extra research I did aided in my learning in the topic as a whole. In reference to Nicole‘s blog post, I picked up something rather interesting. She spoke about the co-relation between social media and self-esteem. This can be seen in




This was something that I totally didn’t thought of until reading her post. However the underlying take away from this, strongly resonates within me.

It bring me back to the main core idea that companies these days, are trying their best in creating a positive image for their product or services thru social media. So much so that they incorporated unethical methods.  However, we live in an ever competitive world, we can’t really put 100% of the blame on firms that practices social media in a unethical way, I personally feel that as long as they are following the law and not doing anything illegal, the firms can adopt any method they deem fit to.

We as consumers have the responsibility to be well educated in the field of social media and to be aware of the unethical methods out there that companies can adopt to potentially cause us to be “victims”.

Paid Reviews For Food Bloggers, Ethical? I think NOT!


In Singapore’s fiercely competitive F&B industry, the constant flow of publicity is crucial for restaurants to stay on the radar of indecisive diners.

Social media was the obvious “go to”, anyone with a smartphone is now constantly barraged with Instagram posts of food and blogger reviews.

Sadly, filtering the legitimacy of one from another is nearly impossible! Hosted meals are usually not mentioned or in fine print at the end of the review.

From the business perspective, paying a food blogger to write a good review is certainly a very effective way to boost traffic and publicity. However, from the consumer stand point, do you feel cheated? We believe in the food blogger’s reviews because we trust their judgement and that these are unbiased opinions from ordinary customers like us. However, is that really the case? Are the food bloggers really objective in their reviews in consideration of being paid?

Lets go in the context of Singapore’s top food bloggers,


According to The Business Times, a F&B operator paid “ladyironchef-Brad Lau” a fee of S$3,800 to promote its restaurant via food reviews. Brad Lau with over 640,000 followers on Instagram alone is perhaps the best known food blogger.


Seth Lui with over 13,000 followers on Instagram charges from S$1,000 to S$10,000 for advertorials.

After knowing the fact that relatively most of the reviews are paid or hosted by restaurants, it surely strikes a question in our minds, is it realistically possible to stay objective if one is being hosted to a free meal? or worst, being paid a 4 digit sum to do it?




This is an example of an unhappy customer who followed the recommendations of a food blogger.


Now to the question of being ethical. After reading through this post, do you feel that restaurants are ethical in playing the “trust” card via paid or hosted food blogger’s reviews?

I personally feel that it is normal and acceptable for a business to have paid food reviews as a form of advertorial on social media platforms, however it should be clearly stated in the post that its a sponsored or paid review! The omission of that fact is clearly unethical to me as a consumer.

For businesses thinking of indulging in unethical methods to boost sales, keep this in mind!

Reflection on Topic 3 + 2 Comments

In reference to Yixin’s blog post, I picked up on the usefulness and effectiveness of a video resume! I realized that it is a relevant social tool that I did not considered before. This made me researched more on the aspect of a video resume, where I learnt that it can be brought to a higher level!

I am not advocating the use of “SnapChat” as your next tool but the underlying idea behind it! Which is capitalizing on the most relevant opportunity in that current time! To stay ahead of the game is “standing out” once the mindset is correct, one can adopt any relevant tool in that current time to turn it into his favor!


In reference to Zoe blog post, who is a student from the 1st batch. She made me realized that what I pointed out in my Guide to online Greatness about hyper-connectivity plays a far greater role then I expected! In 2 years time when I graduate and is seeking for a job, a well developed LinkedIn for example may be a common sight for every job seeker, so how do we stand out then?

The answer to that is the skill of leveraging on such digital profiles to build connections! Yes you can have all the “nicest” information on your profile, but if no one can see it, WHATS THE POINT?


I talked about “googling yourself” in my post, in reference to Wei Jie’s post, I learnt something more in relation to the aspect. I learnt about ranking my profile to make my name appear when searched!


Although my “linkedIn” profile is not listed, I am sure that it will be there eventually through further updates and management! This is something which I felt to be very important knowledge in relation to hyper-connectivity. Its all about improving the accessibility of your brand!

Clinton’s Guide to Online Greatness

Before we all mindlessly rush into developing our digital profiles like LinkedIn for example, lets take a step back and think this through!

You might be wondering, “WHY? Stop wasting my time! Everyone is developing their profiles with social tools, I need to join them too!”

Yes! I understand your point of view as based on Jobvite 2015, 92% of recruiters used social media as a recruitment tool. HOWEVER,  if everyone is doing the same thing, HOW ARE YOU GOING TO SHINE!

Firstly, I strongly believe that we should  google ourselves, by doing so, we can predict and remedy any potential problems that may arise. This article shows just how important this step is! This is a stage where we can literally “see” what our bosses can see of us. “To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy”- Sun Tze.

Secondly, We need to have a selective branding mindset. Based on the study of Barret-Lennard (1998), authenticity can be measured by 3 dimensions. The first aspect of it is the degree of self-alienation, where we contemplate who we truly are? who are we being? and who are we compared to? a low level of self-alienation is needed to engender a high level of authenticity. The second aspect is the degree of which we behave and expresses emotion in a way that is consistent with who we are actually are. The final aspect is the extent of which we allow ourselves to be influenced by others in regards to conforming to their expectations.

As we are branding ourselves online, it is crucial to keep Barret’s model in mind to develop an authentic online professional profile. You can also refer to my topic 2 post in regards to the importance of selective online branding.

Thirdly, We need to understand the concept of hyper connectivity. Based on a study, it is shown that in the age of information overload, effectively curating content is what really matters. We must be able to point and direct our viewers to the information that we planned on showcasing! Everybody can post content online, but can all of them successfully showcase it to their target audiences? The above video is an example of how a business adopts the idea of it.


To develop an authentic online professional profile, I believe that we must keep in mind of the concepts that I mentioned above. I feel that these are the primary key things that people tend to miss out on as they focuses on the technical aspects of developing their digital profiles.

Reflection on Topic 2 + 2 comments

Reflecting on the topic, I emphasized a great deal on adopting and managing the use of multiple online identities in my blog post.

After reading my fellow colleagues blog posts, I realized that maintaining and managing also includes aspects like online security. Something which I didn’t cover but is also crucial in the process of managing and maintaining ones online identities.

In reference to Wei Jie’s blog post, I came across a video he posted which talks about how easily someone could take over your life via the online platform. It immediately struck upon me how vulnerable we are in the online space and that someone could literally “take over” your life with just information from online.

In reference to Audrey’s blog post, she showed the consequence of failing to manage ones online identity via a video. Further emphasizing that one should put in great care in posting information online.

In reference to Sheryl’s blog post, the method of protecting and keeping ones online identity safe is clearly communicated through a video. Where she touched on the process of a 2 factor authentication together with the use of plugs-in to prevent the disclosure of private information.

These are the facets of multiple online identities which I am now well aware of due to the great contributions made by my fellow colleagues. I am thankful in the information they shared and that it definitely attributed in the greater understanding I have in regards to managing and maintaining my personal online identities.

Just a random point that I came across while doing the reflection

I still stand firm on my position where multiple online identities should be exploited for ones own well being. I hope that people with the same ideology as myself could benefit more from this reflection in learning to manage and maintain our online identities in a more efficient manner with the incorporation of online security.

Multiple Online Identities

I have always considered the ability to have multiple online identities as a useful tool in life. It allows me to practice selective online branding, a skill which I am certain is crucial in this ever changing online world, where everything we do is monitored and the shroud of anonymity is slowly wearing off.

Benefits of having multiple online identities

With regards in managing online identities, one can easily create a separate and new entity for themselves to serve a specific purpose. For example, in the context of this module #MANG2049, we are going to be taught on how to create a digital profile. Where various digital platforms encompassing of ‘LinkedIn’, ‘Twitter’, ‘Blogs’ and ‘Instagram’ will be established to selectively show ourselves to strangers. The goal is to create and portray a desired image of ourselves to potential employers. As the saying goes “What you can see, is what we showed you”, this can be applied to the online platform with great effectiveness compared to real life. This can be done with tools like ‘Tor’ where anonymity can be skillfully skewed in the advantage of the user.

With multiple online identities, one can also have access to larger social circles. Now the ability to be someone and anyone without the stigma of personal details being tethered online, facilitates the process of creating “fake” identities for the user to join different communities (Masters, 2011).

Downside of having multiple online identities

A powerful tool will definitely have its drawbacks, with the ability to create different personas online, one can easily abuse it to partake in unethical activities. Such activities includes “Catfishing”, where fake identities are made to trick people into having a relationship with them.

With multiple online identities, a substantial amount of effort is needed into maintaining and managing them. Without it, the entire concept can easily backfire and inflict irreparable “harm” to ones reputation. This is one of the reasons why people avoid having multiple online identities as it causes “too much pressure” (Bychawski, 2013).


In my personal opinion, I strongly believe that one should learn the skill of selective online branding in regards to multiple identities, being a marketer myself, the importance of personal branding echoes within me and I would definitely treat my online identities as method of advertising. Although a great deal of effort is needed to maintain and manage it, “I’m not telling you its going to be easy, I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it!” -Art Williams.

Topic 1 Reflection Summary + 2 comments

After reviewing the various blog posts on the topic of ‘digital visitors and residents’, I realized that everybody had their own unique perspective and approach in interpreting and answering the topic.

Everyone used the theories of Prensky and White as the base of their writings with relative similarity. However, it came to my realization that we are in a ever changing world, where technology is constantly and rapidly evolving. As the internet continues to evolve, I am definite that a more relevant theory will come into play. After reading my colleague’s blog post, it is evident that Prensky and White’s theory are unable to cover all spectrum of behaviors in the digital world. Hence I strongly believe that a new theory will need to be created as the line between our online and physical lives continues to blur.

Reflecting on my personal blog writing skills, I noticed that the use of visual aids which encompasses of images, videos and gifs are widely used. As a reader, I was able to understand concepts much easier though those visual aids which my colleagues used. Hence I would certainly learn and try to adopt such visual aids in my following topics to give my readers a better time!

I also noticed that my voice in my writings is rather formal, edging slightly closer to a “essay-like” style rather than a blog post. However, I am confident that I will be able to adapt and adjust my tone, all these can be done through reading and learning from the numerous blogs my colleagues made.

Overall, I felt that blogging is a very interesting experience. This is my first time blogging and it was an enjoyable one, I look forward to the next topic!
